Music taste isn’t random. It’s a record of who you were when you needed something, and what that something was..

Taste shifts with us, and that shift means everything. What moved you five years ago might feel foreign now. The music didn’t change. You did. The version of you that needed chaos to feel alive isn’t the same version that now needs peace to feel safe. Or maybe an old song suddenly opens up, gaining a second life because someone or something new came along and gave those lyrics a deeper meaning. Both versions were necessary.

Sometimes.. two people can hear the same song and have completely different reactions. One feels nostalgia, another feels nothing. Sometimes, one feels a grief they didn’t know they were carrying. The song didn’t do that, it just found the door that was already open.

So the next question isn’t, “What do you listen to?” It’s , “What are you listening for?”

Are you listening for proof that you’re not alone? For a version of pain that sounds prettier than yours? For permission to feel something you’ve been talking yourself out of?

Half the time we don’t skip a song because we don’t like it… we skip it because it knows too much.
