The Heart as an Ocean

I mentioned the word, “heart” today because we tend to think too much.

A day or two ago, here in Bali, I met someone, a woman who’s been traveling the world for years. She asked me,

“Why are you here?”

I didn’t know what to say at first, I got surprised at the question.

She meant, why Bali? Why Canggu?

I got the point, why not anywhere else? I could be in Vietnam or Paris by now. These places are just as inspiring. Who knows?

But yes, “Why are you here, Lhean?”

I paused.

My reaction made me think of those instances when people’s analytical minds betray them that they end up stuck or paralyzed. They don’t know what to say or do all of a sudden. Like I used to be in the presence of my college crush. lol

Then I said, “I don’t know! I don’t even know why I’m here.”

(Hahahaha)

I think the stranger was not so convinced of my answer. She’s one of those people who doesn’t like joining the crowd, thus quite keen and observant— almost like good at reading minds just by looking at you in the eye. Anyway, she inquired a bit further as to why— but I jumped into changing the topic to promoting my own country (Philippines, of course.) I think I was feeling a bit uncomfortable about opening up; although yesterday, a man I was hoping to work with on something asked me the same question and I gave a straightforward answer: the internet here in Bali is faster than in the Philippines, thus worth it. Fact.

Deep down inside, I know the truest answers.
