“Traveling has made a marked influence on Lhean’s artistic sensibilities and style. Coming from a tropical country with stunning vistas and lush landscapes, Lhean has always been inspired by nature and its multifaceted splendour. Her recent trip to Gua Kechil in Raub, Pahang, Malaysia spawned her latest painting series which delves into the immersive experience of exploring this cave that has been carved by nature and steeped in history. In these series of artworks, she used the natural flow of acrylics to simulate the graceful lines of the cave and create texture on canvas.
The limited light illuminating the cave emphasizes the contrast between light and dark. This became a spiritual and meditative experience for the artist. When your eyes can’t see properly, your other senses become heightened fueling your imagination about what entities hide behind the nooks and crannies of the cave; what lurks behind the shadows. In Eyes of the Goddesses (Acrylic on Canvas, 2018), you can clearly see stalagmites looming large and central to the artwork. Eyes and whimsical creatures surround the rock formation as if nature is also observing you while you marvel at her beauty. Meanwhile, A Universe in the Dark (Acrylic on Canvas, 2018) takes on an eerie vibe as ghostly faces peek from dark corners. Bright and glowing beings also inhabit the space, perhaps because in dark places, you must learn to harness light from within.”
